Streaks of blue, orange, maroon, yellow, green, pink, and black filled the bleachers of Sentro Baler as ASCOT holds the opening of Intramurals 2016 in a very colourful and festive mood today, September 7, 2016. The reverberating cheers and yells from the competing teams were of excitement to an epic week of activities that was about to begin.

The College President, Dr. Doracie B. Zoleta-Nantes, then welcomed everybody with a message about excellence and comradeship which is linked with this year’s theme, “Building Camaraderie and Excellence through Sports”. She stated that despite the competitive nature of the intramural events, athletes must remember that all of these activities are meant to inculcate a sense of camaraderie among ASCOTians.

The torch lightning ceremony led by Mr. Robert Bermudo, SCUAA Gold Medalist, the hoisting of team flags spearheaded by the College and Team Officials and the Oath of Athlete led by Ms. Ladie Queenie Torres signalled the official start of the 4-days Intramurals.

The huge crowd of participating teams occupied the place to its limits as the competition begins with the Search for Mr. and Ms. Intramurals 2016. Candidates representing each team paraded their sports attire and confidently answered each jury’s question. Everyone was fired up and excited to know the winners of the search but in the end, the representatives from the Senior High School Department were both hailed as this year’s Mr. and Ms. Intramurals 2016. Mr. and Ms. Intramurals 1st runner up were from the Department of Engineering and Information Technology, while Mr. Education and Ms. Forestry got Mr. and Ms. Intramurals 2nd Runner Up.

The excitement was kept up with the Mascot Competition. Audience was amazed with the different mascot of each team showcasing the creativity, artistry and resourcefulness of every ASCOTians. At the end of the presentation, the Department of Information Technology’s Robotech took the top place followed by the Engineering Department’s Transformers and the Education Department’s Bookworm got the third spot.

The most awaited Cheerdance Competition is the pinnacle of today’s opening activity. Awe-inspiring cheerdance routine was presented to the audience after one another, with each performance showcasing a unique series of graceful dance moves, somersaults, and death defying jumps and stunts. After the dance showdown among the participating Departments, the board of judges deemed the Department of Agriculture and Aquatic Sciences as the Champion, with the Department of Information Technology as the 2nd Placer and the Education Department copped the Third Place.

Sports activities including Athletics, Badminton, Baseball/Softball, Basketball, Chess, Volleyball/Beach Volleyball, Dart, Scrabble/Word Factory, Sepak Takraw, Table Tennis, and Taekwondo will continue until Saturday, September 10.
