August 13, 2024 – The Aurora State College of Technology (ASCOT) School of Agriculture and Aquatic Science held its orientation program for new Bachelor of Science in Agriculture students. The event aimed to familiarize incoming students with the college’s policies, services, and resources, ensuring a smooth transition into their academic journey.
 
Dr. Ma Luz F. Cabatan, Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the School of Agriculture and Aquatic Science, delivered the opening remarks. She extended a warm welcome to the students, emphasizing the importance of their chosen field of study and the college’s commitment to their academic and personal growth. Dr. Cabatan also introduced the faculty and staff.
 
The program featured a key discussion by Dr. Riosahlie Y. Madrid, Deputy Dean, on Republic Act No. 10931, also known as the Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act. She explained that this legislation aims to provide free higher education at state universities and colleges, thereby making quality education more accessible to students. This discussion highlighted the significant support available to students, reinforcing the college’s dedication to their academic success.
 
Ms. Jenny Magbual, Ms. Hazel Aquino, and Ms. Gianedrelle Maxion from the College Library provided an overview of the library services on behalf of the College Librarian, Mardelyn Barrogo. They detailed the resources and support available, including access to a vast collection of books, research materials, and digital resources, all designed to aid students in their studies and research projects.
 
This activity also provided essential information to ensure a smooth start for new students. Mr. Mario Andres, ASCOT Chief Security, outlined the campus security measures and stressed the importance of vigilance and cooperation for maintaining safety.
 
Mrs. Merlie Supsup, President of the Boarding House Association, explained the policies governing the boarding houses, aiming to help students adapt quickly to their new living arrangements.
 
The President of the Bazal Tricycle Association discussed campus tricycle policies, informing students about procedures and regulations for efficient and responsible transportation.
 
Dr. Jonah G. Zante, Senior Faculty, reviewed academic policies for Crop Science, highlighting curriculum, admission, and retention standards. Dr. Riosahlie Y. Madrid, Deputy Dean, covered similar policies for Animal Science, offering guidance on academic performance and program expectations.
 
Oliver Ian A. Abordo, Campus Administrator, provided an overview of general campus policies, covering behavioral expectations and administrative procedures to ensure students are well-informed about campus rules.
 
Kim Ann M. Avenilla, Acting Registrar for Bazal Campus, discussed the online enrollment process, highlighting the convenience and efficiency of registering for classes through the college’s online system.
 
A key highlight of the orientation was the engaging seminar on “Infiltration and Stress Debriefing,” conducted by the 91st Infantry Battalion. This session provided in-depth insights into the techniques and strategies involved in infiltration operations and the essential debriefing processes to manage stress effectively. The seminar aimed to equip participants with practical knowledge on handling high-pressure situations and ensuring optimal performance under stress.
 
Another important seminar was the discussion on “Drugs and LTO Violations,” led by personnel from the Maria Aurora Police Station. This session educated students on legal and safety issues, including the consequences of drug use and traffic violations. Addressing these topics is essential for fostering a safe and responsible campus community and supporting SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions.
Dr. Madrid delivered the closing remarks, summarizing the day’s discussions and encouraging students to take full advantage of the resources and opportunities available to them.
 
Overall, the orientation program provided incoming students with a comprehensive understanding of the college’s offerings, policies, and support systems. It also emphasized the importance of personal responsibility and well-being, setting the stage for a successful academic year at ASCOT.
