Division Training on Mastering the Arts of Tourism in Aurora Through Collaborative Expertise of Industry Practitioners and Educators

On August 30, 2025, the Department of Education’s Schools Division Office of Aurora hosted a Division Training on Mastering the Arts of Tourism, bringing together educators and industry experts. Held at Gerry Shan’s Bay View Restaurant in Sabang, Baler, the training was a strategic effort to enhance the skills of Junior and Senior High School teachers who teach hospitality and tourism. The event, spearheaded by Schools Division Superintendent Dr. Dante G. Parungao and Education Program Supervisor Dr. Jonalyn O. Calado, drew 54 educators from all eight municipalities of Aurora Province.
The training focused on a collaborative learning environment where educators could gain insights directly from industry practitioners. Participants engaged in discussions and workshops designed to deepen their understanding of current industry standards and best practices. The goal is to equip teachers with the latest knowledge, enabling them to better prepare their students for the demands of the modern tourism workforce. “By connecting our educators with people who run our tourism businesses, we’re ensuring that students are not just learning theory, but getting practical insights.” The initiative marks a proactive step by the Department of Education to ensure that Aurora’s growing tourism industry has a steady supply of well-trained, skilled human resources.
Dr. Ricardo G. Gonzales, Jr., Dean of the School of Accountancy and Business Management speaking on the topic of Navigating Tomorrow’s Tourism, said a troubling increase in the skills gap is creating a significant mismatch between academic training and the evolving demands of the tourism industry. He outlined the core challenges facing tourism education today. To address this skills gap, Dr. Gonzales advocates for an evidence-based approach. This strategy calls for direct engagement with the local tourism industry and a commitment to using data to identify specific workforce needs. By analyzing the unique demands of the sector, educators can tailor their curricula to ensure graduates possess the necessary soft skills and sector-specific competencies. This targeted approach is key to overcoming the skills-job mismatch that has become a growing concern. He noted that aligning with the Department of Education’s (DEPED) competency-based curriculum is also a vital step in creating a seamless transition for students from basic education to higher learning. The goal is to build a foundation of skills early on, preparing students for more specialized training in their college years. Dr. Gonzales’s vision is the establishment of the Aurora Tourism Education Council, tasked with overseeing critical changes and ensuring student immersion becomes a permanent feature of educational policy and practice. The future of Aurora’s tourism sector is directly linked to the development of our human resources capital, he stated. The council would serve as a crucial bridge, connecting educational institutions with local businesses to ensure that curricula are consistently updated and that students gain practical, on-the-ground experience. This hands-on approach would better prepare students to become the future leaders of the tourism industry, equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to thrive in a dynamic global market.
Mr. Kirk Joshua C. Bautista, a Faculty Member from the School of Accountancy and Business Management is inspiring culinary teachers with his expertise on Gastro-Tourism Essentials: Designing Meat-Centric Menus for Tourists. He is empowering to create unique dining experiences that talk about Aurora’s rich culture and heritage. This approach transforms a meal from a simple transaction into a memorable highlight of a tourist’s journey. In his discussions, Bautista emphasized that the key to successful gastro-tourism lies in authenticity. By creating menus that feature traditional recipes and unique preparations, Aurora can offer something no one else can. Bautista’s vision is a powerful ingredient to bridge the gap between academic learning and industry demands. By focusing on practical, marketable skills like menu design for tourists, we ensure that graduates are not just ready for a job but are equipped to lead the charge in a rapidly evolving industry. The future of Aurora’s tourism is on our plates, a call to action, encouraging everyone to appreciate the value of local cuisine as a potent driver of tourism.
The activity concluded with an impressive sharing session, where participants expressed their heartfelt gratitude and reflected on the valuable insights and knowledge gained from the seminar. The ceremony also included the awarding of certificates to the resource speakers, recognizing their expertise and contributions to the training. This culminating event underscored the significance of the Division Training on Mastering the Arts of Tourism, as participants and organizers alike acknowledged the importance of collaborative learning and industry-academia partnerships in shaping the future of tourism education in Aurora. The sharing session served as a fitting finale, inspiring participants to apply the knowledge and skills acquired during the training to enhance tourism practices and education in their respective institutions.
