August 16, 2024 – The Aurora State College of Technology (ASCOT) School of Information Technology (SoIT) and the Association of Information Technology Students (AiTechs) held a General Orientation with the theme “A Growing Community: Voyaging to the World of IT.” The event aimed to welcome new students and provide them with essential information for the upcoming academic year.
The orientation began with an opening remarks from Dr. Mayreen V. Amazona, Dean of the School of Information Technology. She emphasized the importance of building a strong community within the School of IT, encouraging students to actively participate in academic and extracurricular activities. She also highlighted the growing opportunities in the IT industry and encouraged students to explore various career paths within the field.
Following the welcome address, a discussion on the career path of an IT professional was facilitated by King Alvin P. Grospe, faculty member. This session provided students with insights into the different career options available to IT graduates, stressing the importance of skills development and continuous learning. He ended his discussion with a tagline BSIT be CUTE! – Committed Until The End.
Mr. Christopher G. Marmol faculty from SoIT presented key points on several topics. He detailed the Retention Policy, Admission Requirements, and Policy on Bridging Programs, explaining how they support student progression and transitions. Marmol also emphasized the importance of IT Certification for professional growth and the academic standards required to maintain enrollment
The orientation also featured an informative discussion on student services. Dr. Alma S. Bayudan Head of Office of Student Affairs provided an overview of the sports services, health services, and scholarship opportunities available to students and other services available to students. She emphasized the importance of maintaining a balance between academics and well-being, encouraging students to take advantage of the resources offered by the college. Additionally, Lorieflor C. Fabrigas, CPA and College Accountant discussed R.A. 10931 known as the The Universal Access to Quality Tertiary Education Act. This law aims to provide free higher education at state universities and colleges, thereby making quality education more accessible to students.
A key part of the event was the turnover ceremony for the new AiTechs officers for Academic Year 2024-2025, facilitated by Jean Reyel S. Lorenzo. The outgoing officers formally handed over their responsibilities to the new set of leaders, symbolizing a fresh start for the student organization. This was immediately followed by the introduction and oath-taking of the new AiTechs officers, who pledged to uphold their duties and work towards the betterment of the student community.
Mark Neil Pagal, the newly elected AiTechs Vice President, then presented the proposed activities for the academic year. The plans include workshops, seminars, and community outreach programs aimed at enhancing the skills and engagement of IT students.
The event concluded with closing remarks from Cristelita P. Lombres, a faculty member of SIT. She expressed her optimism for the upcoming year, encouraging students to make the most of the opportunities provided by the college and to strive for excellence in both their academic and personal endeavors.
