May 24, 2024 – Aurora State College of Technology (ASCOT) recently hosted an enlightening lecture titled “Healthy Eating, Active Living: Good Practices!”, ASCOT Accreditation Hall.
The event, attended by faculty and students from the Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management (BSHM) and Tourism Management (TM) programs, featured Dr. Khin Mar Cho, an esteemed International Agriculture, Food Systems, and Nutrition Specialist from Cornell University in New York City.
Dr. Cho shared valuable insights on maintaining a healthy lifestyle through proper diet and nutrition. She discussed the nutritional value of common foods, advising students on which foods to consume frequently and which to limit. She underscored that while it’s not inherently harmful to eat salty, fatty, and sweet foods, these should be enjoyed in moderation. Dr. Cho pointed out that soft drinks can be consumed occasionally but should not become a regular part of one’s diet. She encouraged the consumption of nutrient-dense foods such as fruits, vegetables, fish, eggs, and meat, while emphasizing the importance of moderate meat consumption.
A key focus of Dr. Cho’s lecture was the proper preparation and management of food to minimize waste. She advocated for careful meal planning, purchasing only necessary items, and proper food storage as critical steps in reducing food waste. This approach not only ensures healthy eating but also promotes efficient use of resources. “Think globally, act systematically. Safe environment, safe food, better health,” Dr. Cho remarked, encapsulating the essence of her message.
In her closing remarks, Dr. Cho expressed her gratitude to ASCOT for the opportunity to share her passion for proper nutrition and food waste reduction. The event also saw the presence of ASCOT President Renato G. Reyes and notable guests including Mr. Junel Soriano, Director of DA-BAR, and former ASCOT presidents Dr. Benny A. Palma and Dr. Doracie B. Zoleta-Nantes.
This collaborative event highlights the importance of international collaboration, academic exchange, and faculty development. It not only strengthens the ties between institutions but also sets the stage for future partnerships, ultimately benefiting the academic community and students alike.
Dr. Khin Mar Cho’s lecture at ASCOT is a testament to the power of knowledge-sharing and its potential to inspire healthier living practices and sustainable food systems.
