October 17, 2024 – Aurora State College of Technology (ASCOT) set to partner with Central Luzon State University (CLSU) to implement the DOST-PCAARRD-supported project, “CLSU Project RICE: Quick and Nutritious Response to Impacts of Calamities and Emergencies.”
During a meeting with ASCOT President Dr. Renato G. Reyes, the CLSU’s Department of Food Science and Technology team, including Dr. Joel Juvinal, Assoc. Prof. Geraldine Tayag, Assoc. Prof. Venus Lagmay, and Mr. Louis Ramos, discussed developing nutritious, easy-to-prepare food products for communities affected by natural disasters.
The project will focus on creating three rice-based products: instant brown rice porridge, instant aromatic rice porridge, and nutrient-enriched rice cookies. These products are designed for quick preparation and storage, ensuring access to nutritious food during emergencies.
Dr. Reyes emphasized the importance of science and technology in enhancing community well-being and pledged ASCOT’s support for the project. He plans to collaborate with the local government, ASCOT’s extension office, the Department of Education (DepEd), indigenous groups, and local communities to launch the initiative.
Also present on the said discussion were Dr. Ricardo G. Gonzales, Extension and Development Office Head; Ms. Annie R. Capin, Dean School of Industrial Technology and Mr. Joseph T. Gonzales, Board Secretary V.
This partnership underscores the role of innovation in disaster preparedness, aiming to help affected communities recover quickly with nutritious food options.
