August 16, 2024 – The Agri-Aqua Innovation Pitch Fest 2024, held at the Royce Hotel in Clark, Pampanga, brought together key players in the agriculture and aquatic sectors. Hosted by the Department of Science and Technology’s Philippine Council for Agriculture, Aquatic, and Natural Resources Research and Development (DOST-PCAARRD), in collaboration with Pampanga State Agricultural University (PSAU) and the Association of PAQE Professionals (APP), the event showcased groundbreaking technological advancements.

DOST-PCAARRD unveiled 22 innovative technologies, one of which was the Biopesticide from Boton (Barringtonia asiatica L.), developed by the Aurora State College of Technology (ASCOT). This eco-friendly biopesticide, derived from the seeds of the fish poison tree, offers an effective solution for managing agricultural pests, supporting organic farming practices, and ensuring human safety. It is especially beneficial for use in rice paddies and vegetable gardens.

Mr. Mart Angel Quiap, Project Technical Assistant II for the IP-TBM project at ASCOT, presented the BOTON Biopesticide technology. This innovation was the brainchild of brilliant faculty members Dr. Ma Luz Cabatan, Mr. Jomer Mangawang, and Ms. Chenie Mae Bibon, all from the School of Agriculture and Aquatic Sciences. According to Mr. Quiap, the technology was designed to address the pressing issue of golden apple snail infestations, which significantly impact rice yields and cause economic losses for farmers.

During his presentation, Mr. Quiap demonstrated how the BOTON Biopesticide, made from Boton tree seeds, provides a natural, effective, and environmentally friendly solution. He also discussed the production process and financial benefits, emphasizing its potential as a viable investment.

Mr. Quiap noted that the feedback from the event was encouraging. “It felt rewarding to share this promising technology that could make a difference in pest management and support our farmers,” he said.

Also present at the event were Dr. Ma Luz F. Cabatan, ASCOT Vice President for Academic Affairs; Dr. Alking Gorospe, Director of the Research and Development Office; and ASCOT President Renato G. Reyes.

The Agri-Aqua Innovation Pitch Fest 2024 successfully highlighted the importance of innovation in agriculture and aquaculture, with ASCOT’s BOTON Biopesticide as a promising solution for sustainable farming.
