ASCOT Holds 3D Printing Seminar and Training for Faculty

The Aurora State College of Technology (ASCOT), through its Research and Development Office, spearheaded the 3D Printing Research Seminar and Training Workshop for faculty members. The three-day seminar, running from March 26 to March 28, 2025, gathered representatives from various schools across ASCOT to explore the latest advancements in 3D printing technology.

Engr. Alking Gorospe, PhD, Director of Research and Development office highlighted the objectives of the workshop— to equip faculty members with practical knowledge and hands-on experience in 3D printing, enhancing their research capabilities and enabling them to integrate cutting-edge technology into their teaching methods. This initiative aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 9: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure.

ASCOT President Dr. Renato G. Reyes expressed his gratitude to the participants and guest speakers, emphasizing the value of continuous learning. He encouraged faculty members to carry forward the knowledge and skills gained from the workshop, while extending his appreciation to the experts for sharing their insights.

3D printing, also known as additive manufacturing, is a process of creating three-dimensional objects layer by layer using a computer-generated design. This technology has revolutionized industries by enabling rapid prototyping, customized production, and innovative research applications.

The comprehensive workshop covered essential topics such as an overview of additive manufacturing, 3D printing materials and technologies, dimensional accuracy of 3D-printed parts, and post-processing techniques. Participants also explored advanced subjects, including the evaluation of tensile behavior of 3D-printed fiberglass-reinforced nylon composites and the characterization of thermal and mechanical behavior under thermal cycling conditions.

Hands-on exercises played a significant role in the training, allowing participants to engage in computer-aided design (CAD) modeling and operate 3D printers. These practical activities aimed to strengthen their technical proficiency and prepare them to apply 3D printing in future research and instructional activities.

The workshop featured esteemed subject matter experts from Bataan Peninsula State University, including: Prof. John Ryan C. Dizon, PhD, PIE – Manager of DR3AM Center, Engr. Madelene V. Villablanca – Extension and Training Unit Head, Engr. Arman Ray N. Nisay, PhD – Auxiliary Unit Head, and Engr. Gerald S. Robles – Maker Lab Unit Head. Their expertise enriched the learning experience and provided valuable insights into the latest trends and applications of 3D printing technology.
