ASCOT Faculty Upskill in Outcome-Based Education Syllabus Writing

February 8, 2025 – As part of its commitment to academic excellence and curriculum development, the Aurora State College of Technology (ASCOT) Center for Education Research and Resources Development Services (CERRDS) held the third session of its Saturday Seminar-Workshop series on Outcome-Based Education (OBE) Syllabus Writing at Bulwagang Sen. Edgardo J. Angara, Upper Deck.

The session featured Dr. Jonathan V. Macayan, an esteemed OBE specialist and Dean of the Institute for Digital Learning at Mapúa University, as the resource speaker. With extensive expertise in curriculum development, OBE methodologies, and Psychology, along with global affiliations including Arizona State University, Dr. Macayan provided invaluable guidance to faculty members on designing student-centered syllabi aligned with modern educational standards.

A key focus of his lecture was CHED Memorandum Order No. 46, s. 2012, which mandates the implementation of OBE in higher education. While many institutions met the 2017 compliance target, challenges in fully integrating OBE principles persist. Dr. Macayan emphasized OBE’s transformative approach, highlighting the importance of stakeholder engagement, institutional alignment, and continuous professional development.

He also underscored the importance of structuring an OBE syllabus by defining clear program, course, and learning outcomes. He stressed the necessity of aligning instructional content, assessment methods, and teaching strategies to ensure an effective OBE framework that fosters meaningful student learning experiences.

This seminar-workshop serves as a vital step in ASCOT’s ongoing efforts to enhance teaching methodologies and strengthen academic programs. By equipping faculty with innovative strategies and industry-aligned best practices, ASCOT reinforces its commitment to Quality Education (SDG 4) and ensures its students are future-ready in an evolving academic landscape.
